Comparing Business graduate degrees?
what is the disadvantage of an Masters in International Business and Global affairs to an MBA I do not want to wait for 2-3 years of work experience for an MBA. what do you all think if it is from a good university?

The disadvantage is that it is specialized, making it harder to find a job in that field. And if you don't, you won't be eligible for all of the jobs which are looking for someone with an MBA. It isn't as widely known a degree, and so many employers may not recognize it as readily as they would an MBA. You really don't lose any time by waiting 3-5 years for a good MBA program, because if you go right on, the jobs you get will be entry-level jobs and it will take you another 3-5 years to reach the level you would be looking for with the MBA if you had the work experience beforehand.

Can you get your masters in something not very related to your undergrad major
Can you get your masters in something not very related to your undergrad major?
I will soon have a bachelors in International Relations with a concentration in Latin America and a sub-concentration in intercultural communications. Would it be possible to get my masters in International Business? Or are these things too unrelated?

No, you should be able to do that. You might have to take some undergraduate business courses as pre-requisites, and they might not give you credit towards your masters. Ask the college(s) that you are considering to be sure.
2
Nope, not unrelated at all. There might be a few business prerequisites that they want you to have that you won't, but you can take those on your own before you apply if you want. Since your undergrad has an International focus, you're already further along than you think. International Relations is VERY relevant to International Business: you already know something about the communication difference, which is more than an Engineering major applying to the program would know. Good luck! :-)

I agree with Emiily. you would have to take pre-req business courses before taking the Graduate courses. In some instances, you have to attain a second-bachelors degree before getting your masters. But that's if you are going into two totally unrelated fields. Like myself, I have a bachelors degree in Business, and now I want a Nursing degree. Well, I have to first get a" second-bachelors" degree in Nursing and then a Masters' degree in Nursing. This is not your case, just giving you an example. If I were you, I would send a few colleges an official transcript and let them evaluate it for you, and tell you exactly what you need. You would be surprised, how different schools require different pre-req, GPA, etc. Of course you would have to pay an application fee to the various schools, but just check around on websites of the schools. Good Luck!

those are pretty closely related, and even if they weren't, you can get a master's in whatever you want, it doesn't have to go with your bachelor's degree. you just have to be able to succeed in the classes you take, which usually means taking a few undergrad classes that relate to your master's before diving into it. you'll be fine. good luck!

whats a good language to learn for international business?
I'm going to be attending college soon and I'm looking to go into economics.and knowing more than one language is useful and I'm either thinking of learning German or Russian.I'm going to be studying what ever language i Learn for 4 years in college so by that time ill have the language perfected so difficulty of the language doesn't really matter 4 years is plenty of time to master a language. both Germany and Russia are massive economy's and important in the world but I'm not sure what to learn what would be more useful?

Definitely Chinese and definitely Japanese. Very difficult to master, but China and Japan are HUGE power-players in the economy. In my opinion they are much more prominent than Russia or Germany.
2
Depends where you want to do business. I would suggest French (France and a lot of Africa and it is an important language in the EU and Canada.), Portuguese(Brazil will be a a powerful country in the future) , Mandarin(China is powerful already), Spanish( Most Latin America) Most Germans speak perfect English. Russian is not that important

jobs in government usually do not require a business degree - you would be wasting your education - talk to your schools job placement office about career choices

What to do after Bachelors degree in International Business? Whats next? options?
I am finishing a Bachelors degree in International Business and want to stay in college. I would like to go to grad school but is 22 years old too young for an MBA or a Master's? Also would I be able to get a Masters in a unrelated field. Thanks

My daughter started in grad school 4 months after her 21st birthday and will be starting her doctorate 4 months after her 23rd birthday next year. So no, it is not too young. And yes you can do an unrelated field but just watch out for the prerequisites if you are thinking of something like Engineering.
2
Getting into a Master of Business Administration program at 22 could be rather difficult. Many MBA programs recommend or even require you to have a certain number of years of full-time work experience. The rule of thumb is two years for full-time programs and much more for executive programs. The two year requirement is usually part of the requirement for acceptance into a Master's in International Business too. Don't get discouraged, the two years work experience is "not set in stone." Check with the grad school where you are presently working on your Bachelors and see what they think. Good luck!

Management Major VS International Business Major
Management Major VS International Business Major?
I go a popular state-chartered university in the south and just got accepted to a Management Major and an International Business Major. I must choose which one i want to study. Under both majors, i'll be minoring in Spanish. What i really want to do is be an entrepreneur and/or work for a large organization under their legal department. I guess what I'm trying to ask is...which major is better if I was going to get a master's in legal business? The only downfall for choosing International Business major is the possibility of NOT getting a master's in something---thus i'm stuck with a degree that requires a lot of travel!?? I need help in weighing the pros/cons to each major!? In the end i want to ultimately do legal business (some sort of law degree)...which one would look good on an application? thanks!

Firstly if you want to do actual "legal business" then a Juris Doctor is what you need and not a Master's in Law. This degree is for those who wish to analize and teach law and not for those who wish to practice law. As for which major, well you run the risk of not getting into a law school with any major you choose, weather it be business, psychology or English. There are no guarantees. However to answer your actual question, I would study management over international business if you want to study corporate law. International business is a relatively poor degree which lacks a lot of substance and you will learn all you need to know about international law during your time in law school. Management is a more solid degree and will give you a better understanding of how a business and the industries actually work.

I am a management major and I love it. You say you want to be an entrepreneur in a legal department? I really don't know what that would entail, but it seems like Management would be a better degree to go with, then you could get your Master's.

How can you become a business consultant
How can you become a business consultant?
I have an undergrad degree in finance, but relatively little good job experience. It's been really tough for me in the employment market. I was thinking of going for a Masters of International Business or a Masters of Business or Management etc. Would that be a good move for me? It's kind of similar to an MBA, but requires that you have an undergrad degree in business. The MBA doesn't. I know I need experience also, but in what field and what do I need my Masters in? It's just been really hard to get good experience in this job market.

In business job titles do not mean all that much. To be a consultant, normally experience is a prerequisite. Here is what I would do. First, I would make a list of skills that you can provide, or would like to be able to provide to clients. Then decide how you will get those skills you would like to provide. This is a simple step. If your very good at lowering costs, maybe you could provide a expense audit and show where costs can be saved and where they could be redirected. Next, Marketing. Make a website, business cards, and begin calling small firms in your area, and work your way up to larger and larger institutions. Depending on your services target those firms. Something like cost cutting is good for all firms. Pitch it to the firms that really need it, but also to the firms that are doing "ok" as a way to prevent disaster. After you have done that, try for repeat clients, do a really good job, and try and make a service that can be repeated. The service can be as simple as making VBA excel spreadsheets to make their life easier. Once they get used to it, they will probably ask for more. Charge at least 50 dollars an hour, it is essential to give off the impression your the best. Now to your degree. The answer is what curriculum fits your needs. An MBA or a Masters? Or maybe a Professional Certification? What is needed is for your to review your needs, and find something that fits them. Also make sure you go to a top tier school. Many times the school doesn't matter but for Business it matters quite a bit. The only business degree that does not is Accounting Bachelors or Masters as it is simply a means to get a CPA. I would tell you my opinion, but there are many variables. The MBA is good for a general business overview plus a little specification. The Masters is good for specification. It depends on where you see yourself in 5 or 10 years and what services you will provide as a consultant.

How can I get MBA in a new business school after I graduated in Masters degree of Computer Science?
I just graduated in MS of Computer Science from DigiPen (Institute of Technology). I decided that I want to do Masters Degree in Business Administration. Would it be difficult for me to enter a business school, knowing that I am Masters in CS graduate? or easier? Plus, I am looking for a business school that is really good in commerce and international business to do there my MBA, which one do you recommend for me? (I don't wanna pay more than 14,000$ as tuition) If I have a GPA in BS of Computer Science B- and a GPA in MS of Computer Science A-, would I get financial aid in MBA of the new business school that I will join? Help me!

It will be good for you to join MBA. there are lots of good universities offering MBA program. Computer graduates find it easy at business schools. Having degree in computer science and MBA will be very advantageous for you. Lots of opportunities in the E-commerce
2
You'd be a strong candidate since even though your undergrad gpa is rather low, your first graduate degree will be what's noticed. You will need to take the GMAT and score high though, to be considered at good schools. Biz schools really love candidates that have technical backgrounds so you'll fit in just fine and shouldn't have any problem with the coursework.

It depends on your career objective. The MBA is a general business degree training students for top level management positions up to CEO or for those with entrepreneurial objectives of starting their own business. The Master of Science is a specialized degree in a particular field such as finance, chemistry, accounting, engineering, etc. training students for top level staff and research positions who prefer not to get into general management. The Official MBA Guide provides a lot of information about the MBA degree and MBA schools and programs. It's a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, and much more. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. Be a lawyer in international business
Be a lawyer in international business?
Folks: I just graduated with a business degree in December, 2009. Currently I work for a local financial service firm. Since I was a business student back in college, I had some opportunities to work on courses like International trade & investment. I'm sure my dream career is to become a lawyer specializing in International business. As a master's degree is needed to become a Lawyer in the U.S, seems like I have to make a choice right now to put myself on the track. I was wondering, what are some important steps for me to get there? Is it better for me to get back to the business school and get my MBA, and than try to go law school. Or apply for Law school directly. Even though I do have a clear goal in my mind right now, I still have a lot of questions and puzzles in front of me. Any comments and suggestions are sincerely appreciated. Thank you

You can split the difference and apply for a joint JD/MBA. Some law schools offer these types of degrees. If you only want to do one or the other, then I think a lot depends on the quality of schools you get into (if you get into a better MBA program than law program, then you should probably going MBA rather than go into severe debt for a law degree that won't get you a good job) and what you want to do with your degree. I can only speak to law school, as I've never even considered getting an MBA, but a JD is very demanding, costs a lot of money, and isn't worth much if it's not from a top school. Prestige is everything with law schools. Don't know if it's the same for MBAs, but I suspect it's less so. The legal field is oversaturated, which is why it's important to differentiate yourself with a JD from a highly ranked school, as well as good grades, and even prior work experience (which you have) helps.

Yes, I do have a proposition that just may appeal to you and will require travel to Europe very often, with exceptional remuneration package attached to it. Contact me at my Gmail address listed in my profile and lets discuss the details.

With what your doing in school, why not start your own business, starting here in the states and growing it Internationally. Collaborate with a business in an industry that is world wide. One example is the telecommunications industry, another is the travel industry. You can travel and pretty much do what you want and work where you want. That would be my advice. Build a business that would bring you an incredible amount of income as well, and have lot's of fun doing it. There are so many different businesses that you can collaborate with and do business with and make a lot of money at it.

Can I obtain a Master's degree in "International Business" even if I have an undergraduate degree in Psych
Can I obtain a Master's degree in "International Business" even if I have an undergraduate degree in Psych?
Hello, I have an interest in going into the International Business or International Law field, I am currently working on my undegraduate degree in psychology, still trying to decide on what to minor in ( straight business or International Business, why i question the international business is because its core requirement is made basically up of political science courses, where as the business core is just made up of accounting, financial management courses, legal courses, so its somewhat a tough decision, or I could just minor in International Studies and study foreign languages). Anyways to get to the point of my question above, even though I am working on a BA psych degree, is it possible that I can get into a Business school or Law school without a degree in those fields? Thanks (serious answers please)

Absolutely. Both the MBA and the JD are degrees which do not require a particular undergraduate major to enter. In a business school, you may not be able to waive some courses that those who were business majors can waive, but you will probably get a better version of the courses in graduate school anyway.
2
To get into a grad bus. school will require taking the GMAT and obviously a good GPA in undergrad. Getting the MBA will require that you take a number of prerequisite courses to fulfill the MBA requirements. This is the only disadvantage you have and will not preclude you from getting your MBA. Same thing holds true with law school, you will need to take the LSAT and have very good GPA from undergrad. Note: you must be prepared for extreme competition and limited choices of schools. The weeding out process is second only to med school, very tough programs,so be prepared.

Can you get into hotel/hospitality management with an a general MBA? I want to get my Masters of Business ?
Administration and do some side courses in management and international business. I don't want to specialize in hotel/hospitality because I don't know if it's "the one" for me. I just like to have the opportunity open for me in case it is. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Absolutely you can. Let me explain that all MBA degrees are general management degrees. Many people think that the MBA consists of majors or concentrations that give you in depth training in a specific field. The degree Master of Business Administration is not the same as Master of Science. The MBA is a general broad degree covering a wide variety of business issues and training students for careers in managing any area of business up to CEO. MBA students study accounting, finance, marketing, statistics, management, economics, strategy, policy, leadership and similar courses. The MBA was developed because people with technical backgrounds getting promoted into management are not always able to manage, and people in management often don't understand the technical fields they manage. That's why MBA programs prefer students with degrees in other than business and with 2-4 years of work experience. Their graduates learn to manage and can speak the language of the people they manage, whether that is engineering, chemistry, medicine, music, or any other field. Many MBA programs offer concentrations, but this usually amounts to 2-3 elective courses in a specific field in the second year of the program. Thus an MBA in marketing may amount to a student taking Market Research, Advertising, and Consumer Behavior as a marketing concentration, while a finance concentration may mean courses in Business Mergers, Security Analysis, and Cost Accounting. Instead of a concentration, an MBA student may opt to take a broad range of electives in Production, Accounting, Marketing, Human Resource Management and other areas in order to broaden his background rather than concentrating in a single area. Before you consider which MBA program is for you, consult the Official MBA Guide, a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, hotel management, entertainment, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, etc), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. It's the best service available at http://officialmbaguide.org. You may want to look for MBA programs that offer concentrations in hotel or hospitality management simply because those schools will attract recruiters from that industry.

For my signature in e-mails should I write Master of ____, an abbreviation, or Master
For my signature in e-mails should I write Master of ____, an abbreviation, or Master-______?
I have my Masters in International Business. For my signature I would like to have it as follows: Name BBA-<undergrad major>, <university> ???(MIB, Master in International Business, or Master - International Business)<university name> My only problem with writing MIB is I feel people don't neccessarily know what the MIB stands for. Considering I'm applying for jobs in investment banking, I'm sure it could be misconstrued as Masters of Investment Banking if I just used the abbreviation. Any input would be appreciated.

Qualifications are like silk underclothes. Nice to have but you can hardly go round telling everyone you have them. Do not use them in your e-mail correspondence it looks rather desperate. The proper place is in the CV where it will be quite clear how clever you are.
3
You could maybe write Master in International Buisiness.
4
I agree with Bilbo. It is better not to put this sort of thing into a signature. As you are applying for jobs, they will see the qualifications in the resume, and if you really want to point it out for some reason, you can do so in the text of the cover letter. If you want to put your qualifications in other correspondence, you could put a reference in your signature to your LinkedIn or similar site where both your qualifications and professional experience will be detailed. (Bilbo, what happened to your face???)

There are many good ones and some are best in one field while others are best in another. What is best for you is the school in which you fit best, one that satisfies your criteria and preferences. Most MBA programs prefer students with 2-3 years work experience after the first degree., Some accept students right out of college if they have good grades and a high GMAT score. Some MBA programs are designed specifically for new college graduates without work experience. But in those programs you don't get the benefit of learning from other students who have work experience. A lot of valuable learning takes place through class interaction. Before you decide on an MBA program explore the Internet for information on available programs. There is a lot of information available. Some sites are limited to specific countries, such as Germany, UK, or Australia. There is a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. The nice thing is that it allows you to find the program that best fits you. There is no such MBA. Universities don't grant MBA in information systems, or MBA in finance, or MBA in international business. They grant the degree Master in Business Administration, or they offer the MS in finance, MS in marketing, etc. The MBA is a general degree preparing students for management positions in any level of a business, up to CEO. MBA students study accounting, finance, marketing, management, statistics, economics, strategy, policy, and other courses. Many MBA programs offer concentrations in these and many other fields, but that amounts to only 2-3 courses in your chosen field in the second year of study. Many students avoid a concentration and take a variety of elective subjects to gain a broader background. By the time you finish the first year you'll be able to decide which concentration interests you. You don't become a specialist in a field with 2-3 courses. It generally takes a year of concentrated study. The MBA is not like an MS degree that concentrates study in a single field and prepares students for high level staff or research positions. The MS typically requires an undergraduate education in the field in which you want the MS, or a closely related field. A finance major does not get an MS in chemistry, and a biology major does not get an MS in accounting. If you want to specialize in a particular field other than business administration, such as finance, marketing, operations management, human resource management, or a non-business field such as public health, or public administration, you should get an MS degree in that specialization. MBA programs accept students in any undergraduate field. They prefer students who do not have a business background because they give you the business training but they cannot provide the broad background that managers should have. I have taught MBA students with degrees in Music, Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Psychology, Political Science, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, and many other fields. Most MBA programs prefer students with 2-3 years work experience after the first degree, but some accept students right out of college if they have good grades and a high GMAT score. Some MBA programs are designed specifically for new college graduates without work experience. No one should consider an MBA program without consulting the Official MBA Guide. It's a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. It's the best service available at http://officialmbaguide.org.

MBA or general Master of Business
MBA or general Master of Business?
I could do an MBA in the States, but since I don't have that much experience, the school would not be that good. Maybe tier 4 or tier 3 max. Was also looking at a general Masters in the business field, not an MBA. The schools I could do that general Masters of Business are ranked much better, but I am not sure how a general Masters of Business will be perceived. It's in particular the Maters of International Business I would be interested in. What should I do? Note, I do not have that much work experience and I don't live in the USA. It is impossible for me to find jobs in my country as there are absolutely none. So no experience I would be able to add for the time to come I think.

If you're willing to move to the U.S. anyway, then look for jobs somewhere else. A general masters in business won't help you enough to be worth the expense, and employers are still going to want to see the work experience when you're done. (You might consider another internationally-focused degree, though.)

I don't personally have a degree in that field, but I don't see why not providing that one has the right prereq's as well as an awesome gpa (grade point average) and graduate management admission test (gmat) score that the master's degree program requires. For US colleges: www.utexas.edu/world/univ

International Business Degree... I need some help/answers
International Business Degree... I need some help/answers.?
I am returning to school to study international business, also I am fluent in Serbian/Croatian, and I will study French and German, considering that US does major trading with these two European countries. I personally want to move/live in one of these European countries and work for someone in the US. How difficult will it be for a guy just out of school to work over seas? And will the Masters in International Business help me speed up the process of earning trust and beeing sent abroad? Also do people get better pay if they go abroad, or if they stay in the US?

Hi, I am an Overseas Education Counsellor. As regards setting up abroad lot of young students want to do that but best bet to settle abroad is take up a local education. I would recommend you pursue a degree in international business from France and you can settle down there. France is the heart of Europe and easily accessible to all countries. French language is spoken by 60% of European Population. Many Non European companies look for candidates from local area who can work for them in European Countries. Corporates always look to recruit candidates from local geographical region as it saves them relocation costs and above all they dont have to worry about an employee getting adapted to a new culture and environment. A local recruit means cutting down a lot of costs and reducing lot of hassles. As i can see you already know european languages you will not find it difficult migrating to Europe. So better off if you want pursue a management degree in France and then you can easily get a job. If you want we can facilitate to process your application with one of partner institutions we promote. Regards Rohan
